What is Motiq Technologies?

Motiq Technologies, Inc. is a healthcare technology company headquartered in Tampa Bay, Florida, founded by Desiree Lazaro, Founder and Chief Executive Officer. It is building a predictive and descriptive platform for the handoffs between institutions — cross-facility, cross-payer, cross-specialty — where high-acuity patients are most often lost. Motiq is built to predict a delay before it happens, explain why, and suggest a fix for the care team to act on. The design premise is that no institution can see these transitions alone: every hospital that contributes sharpens the view for all of them, which is how a credit bureau works for banks. Two things make that buildable now rather than five years ago. CMS began paying for the coordination work itself, through transitional care management and principal illness navigation, and made selected hospitals accountable for the 30 days after discharge under the TEAM model. And the rails to move data between institutions arrived: information blocking rules in April 2021, TEFCA in December 2023. Motiq is finishing feasibility work and preparing for the pilot stage; it does not yet sell a commercially available product.

Who founded Motiq Technologies?

Motiq was founded by Desiree Lazaro, Founder and CEO. She is a childhood cancer survivor. In her own words: “I was treated for cancer as a young girl, first at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York, then later as a college student at Moffitt after relocating to Florida.” Neither institution has a business relationship with Motiq. Her career spans fraud investigation and liability at a Fortune 100 insurance carrier, personal-injury case management, program management of a multimillion-dollar federally funded AI-in-clinical-settings initiative co-hosted at the University of South Florida and Cornell, and co-founding MediMotos, a tech-enabled non-emergency medical transportation company. She completed NSF I-Corps customer discovery for Motiq, conducting more than 100 hours of interviews with patients, care coordinators, clinicians, and hospital executives.

What problem is Motiq trying to solve?

Health systems are built around the episode. The cost runs in the spaces between episodes. Motiq's founder calls those spaces the moments of modality: the transitions between providers, facilities, specialties, payers and appointments, where a high-acuity patient is handed off and no single institution owns the result. Claims data and the electronic health record are built to capture the episode inside one facility. Many preventable failures happen in the days between episodes, across institutions that share no record and no workflow. For a hospital, the bill for that gap arrives in four places: excess length of stay and preventable readmissions; financial risk under CMS's TEAM model; administrative time and clinical burnout spent chasing information that should have travelled with the patient; and downstream revenue lost when delays send a patient to another system, which for an oncology patient means radiation, chemotherapy, imaging and follow-up surgery leaving with them. Medicare now pays for parts of the coordination work directly, through transitional care management and principal illness navigation, so closing the gap can generate revenue rather than only avoiding cost. Shrank et al. estimated the national cost of failure of care coordination at $27.2 billion to $78.2 billion annually (JAMA, 2019), with $29.6 billion to $38.2 billion of that considered recoverable. That is a national estimate, not a hospital-specific figure.

Who is Motiq built for?

Hospitals and health systems treating high-acuity, cross-subspecialty, chronic-care patients. Within them, the intended users are quality and safety leadership, care management and case management teams, discharge planners and coordinators, and clinicians who manage complex patients across service lines.

Can I buy or use Motiq today?

Accepted Answer

No. There is no commercially available Motiq product. The company is finishing feasibility work and preparing for the pilot stage. No pilot is currently underway, committed, or scheduled, and pricing has not been set. Motiq is seeking conversations with hospital leaders, clinicians, prospective pilot sites, and people who understand hospital procurement.

How would Motiq differ from EHR analytics or population-health platforms?

Accepted Answer

Existing platforms are generally built for population scale and retrospective analysis, and they do that well. Motiq is being designed for a different job: forward-looking, patient-specific, focused on the transitions between institutions rather than a single facility's episode of care, and drawing on signals that are not captured in claims or EHR data today. This is a design intention for a product still in feasibility, not a demonstrated result.

How will Motiq handle hospital data and security?

Security and privacy requirements are being designed in from the start rather than added later. Motiq is being built to HIPAA requirements and to the SOC 2 Trust Services Criteria, and the architecture is designed to keep each contributing hospital's data separated from every other contributor's. Motiq runs no production system today. Neither standard offers a certificate a pre-pilot company could hold: HIPAA has no certifying body, and a SOC 2 report can only be issued after an audit period on a running system. Motiq will say it has a SOC 2 report when it has one, and not before.

What is the status of Motiq's patent and federal funding?

Motiq has provisional patent applications on file covering its core methodology, and is working with retained intellectual property counsel on next-stage filings. Motiq completed the NSF I-Corps customer-discovery program with a recommendation to advance. Multiple SBIR Phase I applications are in progress across several federal agencies: one is being revised for resubmission after reviewer feedback, and at least one more is in preparation.
